Our Story

Blue Cairo began in 2018 as an Instagram page created by Egyptian-Hungarian couple Omar and Biborka. What started as a small project to explore Egypt’s history and folklore quickly grew into a journey through a world of tales, legends, poetry, and art.

But Egyptian art isn’t just one story. It’s a giant collage shaped by many different cultures.

Art was born when Ancient Egyptians created the color Blue. They used it to paint the gods, heavens, the underworld, the stars, and the beautiful Nile.

But this changed over time. Different art came into Egypt. A lot of it.

Statues and columns sailed across the Mediterranean from Greece and Rome. Poetry and calligraphy crossed the desert on the backs of camels from Arabia. Wool tents traveled the Silk Road with the nomads of Central Asia. Silk rugs came to Cairo with the master knotters of Persia. And from even farther east, came the delicate Blue ceramic flowers of China. Not many people know about this richness in Egyptian art. Most of them only see Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, and Islamic art.

In reality, our art is much richer than these broad terms. It has nuance. Stories. Journeys. And it took thousands of years to come together.

But there’s a problem.

Egyptian art has stayed in its classic forms. You see it in temples, churches, mosques, and museums. But it has rarely been reimagined in a contemporary way.

We’re changing that by bringing Egyptian heritage into the present, combining the playful Egyptian spirit with contemporary art and expert craftsmanship.

Every one of our garments is rooted in Egypt. And it invites you to be part of the rich, shared heritage of Egyptian art.
